History of Jaastenland

Pre-war History through LY 2142

Jaastenland has been settled for almost seventeen centuries, but the major nations of Kyriabor, Smeisserand, and the Southern Patriarchy of Chirrar'-Hroch have been around for less than five hundred years.

In addition to these settled and civilized nations, there are many smaller states tucked in and about the continent. Tarnia and the lands of the kenku would be included in this category.

Colonization of Jaastenland

The first known colonies in Jaastenland came from the Four Kingdoms. Explorers and settlers arrived in the middle of the fifth century, bearing the flags of Landers and al-Yared. This was also the time of the Devastation of Ionia by magical war and hubris. Many people fled Ionia to new colonies in Jaastenland, although there were very few settlements actually founded in the name of that doomed nation. Some notable colonies (certainly not all of them!) include:

Unsfaarnia (LY 438 - LY 1357) was founded on the western tip of Jaastenland as the personal domain of three powerful sorcerers from Ionia. These sorcerers supported the same faction in Ionia, but their help was not enough to prevent the destruction of their homeland. The three started out as friends, and remained on good terms even after their deaths and subsequent lichdom. Unsfaarnia was always a country looking to take by force what others had built by hard work. The wars of conquest had always broke upon the rock that was Kraanland until the Triune of Death destroyed Kraanheim by earthquake and fire in LY 1188. Kraanland was saved by a stubborn defense and an alliance of dragons from Star Island. With their armies defeated, the sorcerers attempted to use their magic to gain final victory. Tragically, their efforts unleashed a devastation upon Unsfaarnia the likes of which had not been seen since the final days of Ionia. The magic wreaked havoc upon the land and upon all creatures that walked, crawled, or flew. The ruined Unsfaarnia became known as the Forbidden Lands.

Vargas (LY 481 - LY 1358) Vargas was an early colony that was founded by Ilandic and al-Yaredi settlers. It included the present-day province of Vargas, the Wittiard Plains, Carhill Mesas, and region around Elantra. It was continually savaged by kenku attacks and tricks, but remained independent for nearly one thousand years, growing only little by little. Vargas was attacked by Unsfaarnia in LY 1190 and was the center of the resistance against the sorcerer-kings' armies in Donnertal Pass and the Alaan mountains. It was later absorbed peacefully into the Kingdom of Vegas.

Kraanland (LY 529 - LY 1358) was one of the early settlements built by Kraanichers in the west, in what is present-day Smeisserand. The capital of Kraanheim was built on the mouth of the Saarvan River and stood until its destruction in LY 1188.

Vegas (LY 1358 - LY 2022) was the name of the alliance that became a country when the Unsfarrnian armies were defeated. Vegas spanned most of present-day Smeisserand and Kyriabor. The dragons of Star Island brought the Kraanicher and Landish peoples together in an alliance to stop the evils of the Triune of Death in LY 1292. Although the victory was more than sixty years in the making, and consumed the lives of no less than eight mighty paladins and thousands of other dedicated warriors, it came, nonetheless. Unfortunately, Vegas the country was never very stable. With the great danger of Unsfaarnia gone, the factions continually argued about the right ways to live and govern. Vegas broke apart in LY 1733 into two territories—the Kingdom of Vegas and the Republic of Free Vegas (shortly Kyriabor).

Problems with the Kenku

The kenku have been in Jaastenland for unrecorded centuries, predating the arrival of mankind and the kzinti on the world of Saltwave. When the kenku realized the permanent and ordered nature of the human colonies, they became alarmed. The initially playful tricks that kenku had played upon the human settlers were never received with the proper good humor they deserved. Humans usually responded with force, misunderstanding the nature of the kenku.

At the time there were four plumages, or races, of kenku: the Yellowtail, the Bluefoot, the Redshoulder, and the Greenstripe. Each plumage was spread throughout the continent. The Greenstripe inhabited many of the same areas that the humans favored. Shortly after the colonies "rejected" the kenku jokes, the Greenstripes were embroiled in a vendetta-like war with the human colonists over territory and beliefs. With the help of freeswords and the magic of several Ionian refugee mages, the Greenstripes were almost totally eradicated. The Redshoulders, longtime friends and allies of the Greenstripes, were also badly hurt by the "bird hunts" organized and supported by the colony leades. Within fifty years, the Greenstripes no longer existed and the Redshoulders had sworn the destruction of humankind. This emnity has lasted to the present day.

Ruins of the Ancients

The colonists of the fifth century were not the first humans to settle Jaastenland. Explorers and adventurers discovered ancient ruins late in the sixth century. An entire ruined country, with ruins stretching for miles, was found on the southwest peninsula of Jaastenland in the eighth century. These ruins proveed extremely perilous. Those venturing there succumbed to a red, blotchy wasting disease of the skin and bowels. The place was regarded as cursed, and only those seeking their own deaths went there. The ruins are still there, although the Red Wasting has most likely waned with the passing of years.

The Vegas Civil War

The Kingdom of Vegas was originally founded by Kraanicher colonists from Saltwave and fugitives from the Ionian cataclysm in the fifth century, Landers reckoning. The original settlement at the mouth of the Saarvan River was named Kraanheim. This became the capital of Kraanland in LY 529 until its destruction in LY 1188 by the Triune of Death from the neighboring country of Unsfaarnia. The city was rebuilt 170 years later as Katraal, after the Kraanicher war to defeat the necromancer kings was ended. The rebuilding of Katraal also marked the inauguration of the Kingdom of Vegas.

The Kraanicher kings of Vegas reigned in relative security and stability until King Julian II abdicated the throne in Fyrmont (Colors, in the modern calendar) of LY 1596, 238 years from the founding of Katraal. Julian had six heirs, but made no arrangements for succession. As a result of the Fyrmont Abdication, the kingdom was embroiled in a contest for the throne that lasted four years. King Julian's son, Harold, assumed the throne over the bodies of two of his brothers. The excesses of the nobility had driven most of them into debt. These debts were held by the increasingly powerful bankers, later to become the Lord Guilders of Smeisserand. Five years into the reign of King Harold, the monarchy was overthrown by the bloodless Bankers’ Revolution. Elizabeth Cato was elected the first Premier of Vegas in 248vS (LY 1606).

Vegas in this period was a conservative country extending its reach to its colonies and allies across the sea and on the continent. The territory of Vegas extended over most of the lands of present-day Smeisserand and Kyriabor. Its military complex was efficient, but more given to pomp and parade than to battle, since the kzinti had been fighting at home for the past thirty years. Magical study was rare, and the province of the landed and merchant middle classes, for whom education was easily attainable and of high quality. Indeed, there was a suspicion of any magic that didn’t come from either the druidic priesthood of the Earth Mother, which was the state religion, or from the politically reliable Katraal Theosophical Society. At the time, psionics were publicly unknown, although a secret and widespread lever of power among the Kraanichers. Knowledge of the existence of psionics and psionic powers was supressed by the Kraanicher gentry and nobility.

The two primary factions in the civil war were the Supers, the conservative ruling party in the Congress, and the Kykes, an upstart party of progressive nature. From about 372vS (LY 1730) the Super majority attempted to form a foreign trade union with the colonies and other foreign powers. Their policy granted many concessions, aid, and support to these overseas governments, and supported them with high taxation at home. In 375vS, these policies sparked demonstrations from a groundswell movement of the lower middle classes, sympathetic to the Kykes and demanding wider access to the privileges of the wealthy.

Premier Garth Algosonn ordered the demonstrations ceased and imposed martial law as the Plenary Act was passed by the Super majority in the Congress. The Plenary Act granted special tax relief to trade and craft houses that cooperated with the trade union and placed the tax burden on un- and semi-skilled tradesmen, while reducing support for education for those less able to pay for it (i.e., those people hit with the tax).

In reaction to the Plenary Act, a slap in the face of the Kykes, the lower and lower middle classes revolted, with help from sympathizers sprinkled throughout the social strata, and were violently put down by the military. The factions became armed camps, each advocating the overthrow of the other. They concentrated where they were politically strongest, the Supers in the capital and along the west coast and the Kykes throughout the farmland of the interior and the rocky north. Several areas seceded directly, and the Super government was unable to prevent the fracturing of the nation.

The foreign trade union collapsed as the kzinti attacked the member nations and colonies. Within the year, each of the former human nations had been destroyed and enslaved by the kzin armies. At home, the battles between Supers and Kykes were too inconclusive, and the kzin threat too dangerous, to allow the luxury of the factions "knife-fighting" each other to death in military conflict. The factions withdrew to their own lands and consolidated their power under a de facto cease fire and attended to their own affairs and defense.

Several years later, the Super government of Vegas attempted to overthrow, by subversion and military adventure, the Kyke government of what was then called the Republic of Free Vegas, but failed miserably. The Kyke military had concentrated on techniques borrowed from the Elven Isles and had become fierce and capable wilderness warriors with very flexible lines of supply. The defeat was the last straw for the citizens of Vegas, and they ousted the Premier and most of the Congress in special elections. As a result of the attempted coup, the Republic of Free Vegas resolved to further distance itself from Vegas and took the name of its great prairie, Kyriabor, as its new name.

Twenty years passed before Vegas reopened official contact with Kyriabor, and it took many more years before relations were normalized. The government of Vegas was overthrown again in (663vS /LY 2022), and changed into a monarchy. The land was renamed "The Grand Dominion of Smeisserand." Until the War of Falling Stars and the dissolution of both nations in LY 2143, the two countries were wary trade partners and rivals in different ways—Kyriabor concentrated on education, art and magic while Smeisserand continued to develop international trade and a strong standing army. The Kingdom of Lebensbrüke adopted many traditions from both countries, but with a distinct Landish cultural flavor.
