Mindwalker
Knight Prestige Class
Dungeons
& Dragons Prestige Class (v.30-Oct-2004)
Mindwalkers are elite fighters, using
a combination of martial skills, extraordinary physical abilities, and
psychic powers to advance the aims of their patrons. The original mindwalkers
were Kraanicher members of the Brotherhood of Thought, an evil secret
society of Jaastenland. Some mindwalkers defected from the organization
after learning that it was controlled from the highest levels by devils
in human guise. Others could not comply with the Brotherhood's agenda
of evil and left. By 2155, there were four different orders of mindwalker
knighthood. Two of these (the Knights of Genetic Purity and the Golden
Order) remain restricted only to those of Kraanicher blood. The other
Jaastenland-based order (the White Hand) admits anyone who will serve
the ideals of Lebensbrüke with honor and diligence. There is also
an order of Mindwalkers serving unknown purposes in the Four Kingdoms,
known as the Shadow Dragons.
A Mindwalker is a skilled user of psionic
powers who learns to use his mind to enhance his fighting abilities. He
taps an inner power to defeat, trick, or outmaneuver opponents. He is
bound to serve a specific cause. This cause gives him the focus and discipline
needed to rise above the ranks of more common manifesters of psionic power.
The benefits of this greater commitment and the training are some additional
psionic powers and enhanced combat abilities.
Requirements
Mindwalker knight candidates must obtain the patronage of one of the
three orders that teach the secret techniques of this class. Obvious dedication,
trustworthiness, and serious intent are crucial for acceptance. Each organization
has different alignment requirements and code of conduct.
- Psionics: Must be able to manifest
1st-level psionic powers.
- Base Attack bonus: +4
- Skills: Concentration 6 ranks,
Knowledge (psionics) 4 ranks, Knowledge (war) 4 ranks
- Feats: Psionic Mediatation, Psionic
Weapon
- Special: The applicant must have
defeated an opponent of the order to which he or she applies for membership
and must be accepted for membership.
Class Features
- Weapon and Armor
Proficiency: Mindwalkers gain
no proficiency with any weapon or armor.
- Powers Known:
Mindwalker knights gain additional power points per day and access to
new powers as if she had also gained a level in whatever manifesting
class she belonged to before she added the prestige class. She does
not, however, gain any other benefits a character of that class would
have gained (increased psicrystal powers, bonus feats, etc.). This essentially
means that the mindwalker adds her mindwalker levels to the level of
some other manifesting class to determine power points and powers discovered.
If the character had more than one manifesting class before she became
a mindwalker, she must decide to which class she adds each level of
mindwalker for purposes of determining power points and discovered powers.
- Code of Conduct: The mindwalker
knight must swear a binding oath to abide by the Code of Conduct of
his order. The specific code varies with the order of knighthood to
which the character belongs. The Knights of Genetic Purity demand absolute
obedience, secrecy, and adherence to the principles of racial superiority
(among other things). The Golden Order requires that powers be used
to benefit the order, that the cause of Kraanicher perfection be pursued,
and that deeds never reflect badly upon the organization. The White
Hand knights must be of good alignment and have a strict code of allegiance
to Lebensbrüke. The Shadow Dragons' aims and requirements are unknown.
- Mind Blade (Su): The Mindwalker
gains the Mind Blade ability of the Soulknife class. This works as described
for the Soulknife (pp. 27-28 of the Expanded Psionics Handbook), except
that the progression of enhancement improves more quickly, according
to the Mindwalker table, below.
- Shape Mind Blade (Su): The Mindwalker
gains the Shape Mind Blade class ability of the Soulknife.

- Evasion: (Ex)
The mindwalker gains the evasion ability of the monk class. It functions
in all ways and respects as that power described for the monk class
in the Player's Handbook.
- Free Draw (Su): The mindwalker
can materialize his mind-blade as a free action instead of a move-equivalent
action. He can make only one attempt to materialize the mind blade per
round, however.
- Speed of Thought
(Su): The mindwalker gains the Speed of Thought feat as a
bonus feat, even if he does not otherwise meet the prerequisites.
- Improved Evasion: (Ex) Mindwalkers
gain the improved evasion ability at 9th level. This ability is the
same as the ability gained by the monk class.
